European Commissioner for External Relations and Neighborhood Policy Benita Ferrero-Waldner hailed here on Thursday the establishment of diplomatic relations between Lebanon and Syria as "a historic step."
"I welcome the fact that Syria and Lebanon have established diplomatic relations. This is a historic step towards the normalization of relations between the two countries," said the commissioner in a statement.
She said that the move "reinforces the sovereignty and independence of Lebanon and contributes to regional stability."
"I appreciate the efforts made by both parties to reach this landmark decision," she said.
Ferrero-Waldner encouraged both parties to implement the remaining commitments of the six point communique agreed by the presidents of the two countries in August.
Syria and Lebanon established full diplomatic relations on Wednesday, six decades after their independence from French colonial rule.
