The World Trade Organization (WTO) Director-General Pascal Lamy has decided to seek a second term in office when his current term expires in August 2009, the Geneva-based organization said on Tuesday.
Lamy has announced his decision in a letter to General Council Chairperson Bruce Gosper, who presides over the selection process, a WTO statement said.
The selection procedure requires the incumbent to declare he is a candidate for a second term by the end of November. After that, the election is open until the end of December for additional nominations.
If there are additional candidates, they will then have three months until the end of March to "make themselves known" to the WTO's 153 members, followed by two months of a selection process, ending at the end of May, WTO said.
Lamy, 61, is a member of the French Socialist Party. He had been the European Union's trade commissioner before taking the top WTO post in 2005.
