UN special envoy to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) Olusegun Obasanjo, former Nigerian president, arrived here on Saturday for talks to end the conflict that has displaced 250,000 people and threatened the stability of the Great Lakes region.
Obasanjo, who wrapped up a visit to Angola on Friday, is scheduled to meet with President Joseph Kabila before flying to Goma, the provincial capital of the troubled eastern province North Kivu, according to Madnodje Mounoubai, spokesman for the UN mission in the country known as MONUC.
Despite the worldwide fear of an escalation of conflict between the government forces and Tutsi rebels, Obasanjo remains confident of a peaceful solution to the crisis in the central African country, saying his visit aims to restore peace and stability in the eastern region of DR Congo.
The rebels led by General Laurent Nkunda are stationed at the gate of Goma, where MONUC soldiers are patrolling the streets.
Fighting resumed in August after the government and the rebel signed a UN-brokered deal in January in Goma.
