Some 68 percent of Peruvians believed that the annual Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum would help the country boost its development, a survey showed on Sunday.
Most people spoke highly of the eight-day forum, which started Sunday in the Peruvian capital Lima, according to the survey published on the newspaper El Comercio.
Some groups that intended to stage demonstrations and protests over Peru's internal affairs had said they would postpone their plans so as not to affect the forum, the newspaper reported.
The survey also showed that the majority of Peruvians believed their country would get a greater opportunity for its development by hosting the forum, with 73 percent of respondents expressing their hope for more foreign funds as the outside world would have a further understanding of Peru after the forum.
Official statistics indicated that thanks to closer trade exchanges between Peru and other Asia-Pacific nations or regions since it joined APEC in 1998, the annual economic growth of the South American country rose to 10 percent on average.
APEC, established in 1989, groups Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, China, China's Hong Kong, Chinese Taipei, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, the Philippines, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, the United States and Vietnam.
The 21 member economies began their annual forum, called the 16th APEC Leaders' Week, in Lima Sunday with the start of a two-day senior officials' meeting.
Some 3,600 delegates, including leaders, ministers and entrepreneurs, are expected to attend this year's forum to discuss the ongoing global financial crisis, human security initiatives, food and energy security, climate change, structural reform and corporate social responsibility.
