UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday voiced deep sadness at the inter-communal violence in the Nigerian city of Jos.
"The secretary-general is deeply saddened" at the tragical loss of "so many lives, the displacement of people and the destruction of property," Ban's press office said in a statement.
"The secretary-general is encouraged by the Nigerian government's response to efforts to bring the situation under control and to restore normalcy," it said.
While extending condolences to the families of the victims and to the government and people of Nigeria, Ban stressed the readiness of the United Nations to contribute to efforts to help those affected.
Disputes over local government election held on Nov. 27 triggered riots in Jos, capital of Nigeria's central Plateau State, as supporters of rival sides clashed throughout the city on Friday. Mobs burned houses, looted shops and destroyed mosques and churches.
The violence left thousands homeless, said local media, quoting Red Cross sources.
