The European Commission on Tuesday expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the presidential and parliamentary elections in Ghana, after EU observers concluded that the elections were free and fair.
"I congratulate the people of Ghana for their strong commitment to the democratic process in their country. I also want to commend the authorities for the orderly conduct of the elections, which took place in an open, transparent and competitive environment," said Benita Ferrero-Waldner, EU commissioner for external relations.
"I am pleased to see that fundamental freedoms such as the right to stand for election, the right to vote and the freedoms of assembly, expression and movement were widely respected. These elections can hopefully serve as a good example for upcoming elections in other countries on the African continent," she said.
The European Commission deployed a 70-member EU election observation mission for Sunday's presidential and parliamentary elections in Ghana.
