UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Sunday he was saddened by Palestinian casualties and called for an immediate end to all acts of violence in Gaza and southern Israel.
Ban said in a statement that he "deplores that violence is continuing today."
The UN chief joined the UN Security Council's call for an immediate end to all violence and military activities after Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip left at least 280 people dead and hundreds of others injured.
"He is saddened by Palestinian casualties," the statement said, adding that among those killed were eight trainees of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
