The Department For International Development and United Nations Development Program (UNDP) have signed 3.2 million U.S. dollar worth Memorandum of Understanding to continue supporting the implementation of the National HIV/AIDS response in Nepal for 2009.

According to Wednesday's the National News Agency RSS report, with the additional available resources, UNDP will continue the implementation of comprehensive services for Most At-Risk Populations in 2009 and support the institutional capacity strengthening of the National Center for AIDS and STD Control, Ministry of Health and Population and the HIV/AIDS and STD Control Board.

HIV/AIDS has the potential to become a national crisis in Nepal. The overall HIV prevalence in Nepal is estimated at 0.49 percent of the adult population corresponding to about 70,000 people living with HIV, out of which approximately one in there are women.

The Most At-Risk Populations have been identified as migrant laborers, commercial sex workers and their clients, injecting drug users and men who have sex with men, said the RSS.
