French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said here Tuesday that "a halt to the violence (in Gaza) is the top priority," and "the Security Council has a central role to play" in this regard.
Kouchner, who chairs an open Security Council meeting as his country holds the rotating council presidency for January, told an audience of council members and a team of Arab foreign ministers that the council meeting was held at "a grave moment" when the international community is mobilized to strive for a speedy end to the violence and bloodshed in Gaza and the casualties are rising there.
"A halt to the violence is the top priority," he said. "My country condemns the Israeli ground operations," which began over the weekend and left more and more Palestinians killed.
