The European Union (EU) presidency welcomed on Friday Turkey's appointment of a new chief negotiator, the semi-official Anatolia news agency reported on Friday.
Czech Republic's Ambassadress Eva Filipi, currently holding the rotating presidency of the union, was quoted as saying that appointment of Egemen Bagis as Turkey's new negotiator for EU talks was a good step for not only Turkey, but also the Union.
This appointment was not a surprise because different people undertook the mission of chief negotiator and the foreign ministry in countries that had recently became EU members, said Filipi.
Turkey's Foreign Minister Ali Babacan has been Turkey's chief negotiator for EU talks since May 2005.
The ambassadress said that being a chief negotiator was a full-time duty that required careful action and endeavor.
Filipi also said that every one was respecting Foreign Minister Babacan very much, but reiterated that being a chief negotiator was a full-time mission.
The ambassadress said that they wanted to meet and hold talks with Egemen Bagis as soon as possible.
Egemen Bagis, the deputy chairman of the ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party, was appointed as a State Minister and Turkey's chief negotiator for EU talks late on Thursday.
The European Commission congratulated Bagis on his appointment as the new chief negotiator of Turkey, and said it was looking forward to work with Egemen Bagis.
