U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday called on governments to continue to invest in health despite economic difficulties caused by multiple crises.

"We can cut back on health expenditures and incur massive losses in lives and fundamental capacity for growth. Or we can invest in health and spare both people and economies the high cost of inaction," Ban told a U.N. forum on global health.

"The cost of cutting back is just unthinkable,"

he told a an audience of health leaders from member states, U.N. agencies, civil society, the private sector and academia.
