United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) Director-general Kandeh K. Yumkella has said that the lack of industrialization is the missing key for Africa to join in the global economy, according to a report published by the United Nations Information Service Vienna (UNIS Vienna) on Wednesday.
"Africa's pursuit of industrialization was critical to the continent's full integration into the global economy," said Yumkella in the report.
According to the UNIDO chief, most challenges the continent has to face today correlate with its limited industrial skills and technological capabilities, weak support from institutions, inadequate financing, and underdeveloped internal and regional markets.
The global financial and economic crisis also severely impacted Africa's industrialization efforts, he added.
Yumkella emphasized UNIDO's aim to support Africa's efforts to create a more prosperous future, stating that "it is possible for Africa to overcome the challenges in industrialization and transform its economy, and I am glad to see the various efforts and initiatives it is taking."
On the Africa Industrialization Day, marked on Nov. 20 every year, UNIDO will hold a symposium at the Vienna International Center with the topic "Industrialization for integration: A strategy for continental development and effective participation in the global economy."
