HONG KONG: The Hang Seng Index surged 378 points to a record high of 22,151 yesterday as investors rushed to buy shares of Hong Kong-listed firms that have plans to sell shares in Shanghai.
The index opened with a 200-point leap in the morning session, regaining ground from last Friday to bounce back to a level over 22,000.
The stellar performance of the Hang Seng''s constituents continued the pace in the afternoon. Its heaviest-weighted member, China Mobile, reached an historic high of HK$86.75 on a 3.33 percent increase.
The Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEx) yesterday announced the average daily turnover of the equity market reached HK$59.2 billion in the first half of the year, with the average turnover in June breaking a record when it hit HK$77.9 billion.
Galvanized by the stimulus, shares of HKEx, the listed company that operates the exchange itself, surged 7.42 percent to an all-time high of HK$119.7.
