Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) ministers responsible for trade on Friday stressed the urgent need to make progress on the stalled world trade talks at the end of their two-day meeting in Australia''s northeast resort city of Cairns.
The meeting came just two weeks after the trade talks of Group 4 (European Union, the United States, Brazil and India) collapsed in Germany in a bid to revive the Doha Round of World Trade Organization (WTO). The ministers re-affirmed their strong support for the Multilateral Trading System. "There has never been a more urgent need to make progress and at this meeting we have focused on the key issues which will have to be resolved at this critical juncture if we are to move forward, " said the ministers in a special final statement on Doha Development Agenda released at the end of the meeting. They emphasized that a successful Doha outcome must deliver meaningful new market opportunities in order to significantly expand trade, promote global economic growth and foster development. "We will demonstrate the necessary political will and flexibility, and call upon other WTO Members to do the same," the ministers said, adding "to this end we will engage actively and constructively in the negotiations in Geneva."
