Ecuador seeks agreement with Colombia, Peru to halt cooking gas smuggling |

Ecuador will seek an agreement with Colombia and Peru to crack down on cooking gas smuggling, the Ecuadorian government announced on Monday.
Jorge Alban, deputy energy and mines minister, told a press conference that officials of the three countries would meet to discuss the cooperation.
Ecuador is suffering a cooking gas shortage because 22 percent of its daily purchase is siphoned out of the country, Alban said, adding that
Peruvian President Alan Garcia agreed two weeks ago to boost border controls on cooking gas smuggling at the key points like Huaquillasgo in Tumbes.
Alban said that smugglers were taking advantage of the Ecuadorian government subsidizing the import of gas in order to help the nation's poor. He also promised that the government would not suspend the gas subsidy.
