The total value of Vietnam's information technology industry rose nearly 24.3 percent, much higher than the world's average growth rate, to 1.74 billion U.S. dollars in 2006, a local association told Xinhua Tuesday. The industry's software and service segment made revenues of 360 million dollars in 2006, up from 250 million dollars in 2005; and the hardware segment 1.38 billion dollars last year, up from 1. 15 billion dollars, the Ho Chi Minh City Computer Association said, noting that the total value means the value of production and services to serve the domestic market and export revenues. Of the 360 million dollars, 255 million dollars came from the domestic market, and the rest from export. Among the software services, information technology training generated revenues of 15 million dollars, online game 13 million dollars, value-added services of mobile phone networks 42 million dollars, and online advertisement 7 million dollars. In 2006, the hardware segment made export turnover of over 1.23 billion dollars, the association said, noting that 147 million dollars worth of hardware were to serve the domestic market. By late May, Vietnam had roughly 16.18 million Internet users, many of whom were high-speed Internet subscribers, or 19.46 percent of its total population, compared with over 12.9 million users by May 2006 and nearly 7.2 million users by May 2005, according to the Vietnam Internet Network Information Center.
With over 16 million Internet users, Vietnam ranks the 17th in the world and the 6th in Asia (after China, India, Japan, South Korea and Indonesia) in terms of user number, but only 93rd in the world and the 9th in Asia in terms of percentage of population accessing the Internet, said the association.
