Chile and the United States signed an agreement on Friday to jointly carry out biofuel research and development.

The accord was inked in Santiago by Chilean Treasury Minister Andres Velasco and U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulsen, who is on a visit to the South American country.

Velasco said the cooperation will involve the U.S. energy department and its counterparts in Latin America.

Paulsen said the U.S. and Chile "have a common interest in sharing technology and developing new sources to supply energy and, especially, new supply of clean energy."

"This is a challenge we all expect, especially since it's related to the climate and undoubtedly there is a common natural interest for world countries to collaborate and work together in the energy sector," he said.

The deal came as Chile is suffering an energy crisis due to its dependence on Argentine natural gas supply, which is often slashed in cold seasons.
