Jacques Attali, French economist and former special advisor to the late French president Francois Mitterrand, has accepted to head a commission charged with identifying obstacles to economic growth, the French presidential office said Wednesday.
During a speech delivered in parliament on June 20, French President Nicolas Sarkozy called for the creation of this commission to "identify obstacles to economic growth." Born in 1943 in the Algerian capital of Algiers, Jacques Attali is a renowned economist and author in France. He was appointed in 1981 as a "special advisor" to the then French president Francois Mitterrand on his election as head of state. He is said to have greatly contributed to political careers of Socialist party personalities such as Francois Hollande, the current secretary general of the socialist party, and Segolene Royal, presidential candidate for the socialist in the 2007 elections.
