Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) has canceled all its international flights from coming Wednesday, as its only Boeing in operation is all set to leave for Brunei for a month to undergo a C-check -- an overhaul of the aircraft, local newspaper The Kathmandu Post reported on Tuesday.
The corporation has asked travel agencies not to book NAC tickets for ten days starting Wednesday. NAC's only other Boeing has remained grounded due to engine problems.
Domestic flights of the national flag carrier have also remained non-operational since Friday due to agitation by employees, who said they are exerting pressure on the management to buy new aircraft.
Raju KC, corporate director at NAC, said it is planning to bring back an engine from the Boeing undergoing C-check and use it in the other Boeing. "We expect the grounded aircraft to resume services within a few days," he said.
KC further said NAC would make arrangements with other airlines for passengers who have already bought tickets for NAC.
NAC had made plans to lease an Airbus from Druk Air of Bhutan to continue scheduled flights during the C-check, but the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal did not give the green light for leasing the 16-year-old aircraft.
Civil aviation regulations bar Nepali airlines from acquiring aircraft older than 15 years.
Tourism entrepreneurs said the cancellation of NAC flights would jeopardize the whole tourism industry and further compound air accessibility difficulties.
