Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said on Monday Vietnam wants the World Bank (WB) to financially assist the country in infrastructure, manpower and investment, pledging to make better use of its aid.

"Vietnam and the WB should speed up negotiations on greater assistance from the WB's International Finance Corporation (IFC) in infrastructure, education and training and investment," said Dung when meeting with visiting WB President Robert Zoellick.

Zoellick said the WB agreed to increase aid to Vietnam in the future and add the nation to the list of beneficiary countries from the WB's International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Vietnam News Agency reported.

The bank will work with Vietnam in strengthening provincial level management, tertiary education and infrastructure construction, he noted.

The WB chief praised Vietnam's work in national development, poverty reduction and environmental protection.

Vietnam should center on developing its market economy, especially the private economy if the country wants to become a middle income earner by 2010, said Zoellick.
