Two grant agreements for a total amount of 1.6 million U.S. dollars were signed in Dhaka Tuesday between the Bangladeshi government and the International Development Association (IDA), World Bank's soft-lending window.
Officials said the funds is for preparing two projects regarding sustainable energy and water-resource management, Clean Air and Sustainable Energy (CASE) and Bangladesh Dhaka Environment and Water Resource Management projects.
M Aminul Islam Bhuiyan, secretary of Economic Relations Divisions under the Bangladeshi Finance Ministry, and Xian Zhu, Country Director of the World Bank, signed the deals on behalf of the Bangladeshi government and IDA respectively, private news agency UNB reported.
The proposed amount of the grant for CASE is 900,000 U.S. dollars while 700,000 U.S. dollars for Bangladesh Dhaka Environment and Water Resource Management projects.
"CASE will strengthen the infrastructure, institutional and regulatory framework for air-quality management in Bangladesh. It will also address emission from major sources such as industry, transport and household fuel," says a release on the accords.
It said the grants would be used for preparation of feasibility studies, detailed designs, environment, social and economic assessments and carrying out stakeholder consultations. The last date for its utilization is June 23, 2008.
The Bangladesh Dhaka Environment and Water Resource project will promote integrated pollution management in the watershed of Greater Dhaka and contribute to pollution reduction and improved environmental conditions in the watershed through a series of preventive and abatement measures in selected industrial pollution hotspots.
The grant will be used for activities required for the preparation of the project like feasibility studies, detailed designs, environmental, social and economic and other assessments, development of project implementation plants, carrying out of stakeholder consultations, in-country training, studies and workshops, surveys etc.
The closing date for utilization of the grant is July 7, 2008.
