Yamaha adds pressure on Honda in Indonesian motorcycle market

Japanese motorcycle-maker Yamaha surpassed Honda to lead in the Indonesian market in July, threatening to end all-time domination by its fellow Japanese manufacturer.

Yamaha sold 161,061 units last month, or 17,793 more than Honda, according to the data released Tuesday by the Indonesian Motorcycle Industries Association (AISI).

Suzuki trailed at third with 53,468 units, while Kawasaki was at a distant fourth with 3,187 units.

It was the second time this year Yamaha led in monthly sales, after surpassing Honda for the first time ever in March.

With the latest figure, Yamaha managed to narrow gap by selling 1.05 million units in seven months ending July 2007, against Honda's 1.07 million.

In overall, national motorcycle sales rose 13.75 percent year- on-year to 2.48 million units in the first seven months of 2007.
