Vietnam plans to develop its motorbike industry into a regional center for designing, assembling and producing motorbikes by 2015, according to local newspaper Labor on Friday.

Under a motorbike development plan recently approved by the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the industry will, by 2015, be able to meet all local demand of rural people for motorbikes and 90 percent of the demand for the vehicles in urban areas, and raise the local content in common motorbikes assembled in Vietnam to over 90 percent.

The country also plans to reap 400 million U.S. dollars from exporting motorbikes and spare parts in 2015.

Vietnam turned out nearly 2 million motorbikes in the first eight months of this year, a year-on-year surge of 28.1 percent, according to the country's General Statistics Office. Meanwhile, it spent 450 million dollars importing motorbikes and components for assembly, up 38.8 percent.
