French transport and engineering group Alstom has announced a contract to supply 246 cars to Shanghai's metro system.
Joining hands with Nanjing Puzhen Rolling Stock Works, Alstom signed the 210-million-euro contract with Shanghai Shentong Metro Co., Ltd, operator of Shanghai's metro system. The Alstom-Puzhen consortium will deliver 41 six-car Metropolis train sets to the No. 10 metro line.
Alstom, which holds 66 million euro in the contract, is responsible for design and validation of the first train set, providing traction system, power supply kit, train control and monitoring system and technical services.
The Puzhen Rolling Stock Works is responsible for manufacturing, testing and quality warranty of 21 train sets. Another 20 sets will be manufactured by the Shanghai Alstom Transport Co., Ltd, Alstom's joint venture in Shanghai.
All the train sets are scheduled to be delivery by the end of 2010.
Marc Chatelard, senior vice president of the Alstom Transport, Asia Pacific Region, said the company has so far received orders for about 1,000 metro cars for Shanghai. "Winning the deal with Shanghai once again shows their trust of Alstom's technological strength and management," he said.
Alstom has been a supplier of the Shanghai Shentong Metro Co., Ltd since 1999, cashing in on the expanding mass transit systems in one of China's largest cities.
Over the past week, Shanghai announced a plan to spend 110 billion yuan (about 14.5 billion U.S. dollars) on upgrading its public transport system ahead of the 2010 World Expo.
