Vietnam has planned to intensify steel production by 2025 for domestic consumption and export, the Vietnam News Agency reported Thursday.
Under the 2007-2025 steel development plan recently approved by the Vietnamese government, the country will produce 3.5-4.5 million tons of steel billets in 2010, 6-8 million tons in 2015, 9- 11 million tons in 2020, and 12-15 million tons in 2025.
It will also turn out 6.3-6.5 million tons of finished steel products in 2010, 11-12 million tons in 2015, 15-18 million tons in 2020, and 19-22 million tons in 2025.
Vietnam has targeted to export 0.5-0.7 million tons of cast- iron and steel in 2010, 0.7-0.8 million tons in 2015, 0.9-1 million tons in 2020, and 1.2-1.5 million tons in 2025.
Domestic steel demand is expected to stand at 10-11 million tons in 2010, 15-16 million tons in 2015, 20-21 million tons in 2020, and 24-25 million tons in 2025.
Vietnam is intensifying the construction of more steel plants and upgrade of some existing ones, ensuring material resources, applying advanced technology in steel production, and developing manpower.
Vietnam imported nearly 4.8 million tons of steel billets and finished steel products totaling nearly 3 billion U.S. dollars in the first eight months of this year, respectively up 25.7 percent and 54.9 percent against the same period of last year, according to the country's General Statistics Office.
