Reuters' Editor-in-Chief David Schlesinger on Friday called on the media to raise the consciousness of social responsibility at the World Economic Forum 's Inaugural Annual Meeting of the New Champions in China's northeastern coastal city of Dalian.

In an exclusive interview with Xinhua on the sidelines of the meeting, Schlesinger said China's economic growth has a great impact on the world economy, that's why the WEF chose Dalian to convene its first-ever summer meeting.

China's media industry has witnessed continuous growth in the past 30 years, Schlesinger said, expressing the belief that China can find a unique development road for its media industry.

The editor-in-chief had talks with Vice President Lu Wei of the Xinhua News Agency at a media forum on Wednesday. Both stressed the social responsibility of media.

Lu Wei suggested media throughout the world should raise the consciousness of social responsibility, equality and cooperation, while calling on large news agencies and developed countries to bear more obligations to promote economic globalization and the building of rational order for information flow.

Schlesinger had strong interest in the Chinese history and started learning Chinese since university time. He was once chief of Reuters' Beijing and Taipei bureaus, and began acting as editor- in-chief early this year.
