The Argentine Environment Ministry Tuesday lifted an earlier order to close a refinery owned by the Anglo-Dutch energy firm Shell south of Buenos Aires.
The closure was ordered after an inspection last week found the company had failed to meet environmental standards in such practices as drawing water from a nearby river without a license and improper handling of waste.
Officials said Shell had agreed to put aside 60 million U.S. dollars for adjusting its production according to government environment standards.
Shell produces gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, lubricants, asphalt and solvents using Argentine crude oil.
Fourteen percent of Argentina's gas stations depend on its supplies and they would have to be forced to close if the refinery was shut down.
