Execution contract of optical fiber cable project from Kathmandu to Khasa of China was signed Sunday evening in Kathmandu.
The contract, "Execution Contract of Kathmandu-Khasa Optical Fiber Cable Laying Project," was signed by two state-owned enterprises, China International Telecommunication Construction Corporation and Nepal Telecom.
Speaking at the ceremony, Shankar Koirala, secretary of Ministry of Information and Communication, described the project as "historical", since the optical fiber cable to be built will offer more communication convenience to Nepali people and will do good to both countries' telecommunication network.
"This link could be used as a transit point between India and China as well," He said.
"'To get rich, construct the road first', this is a saying in China and experience of her economic development, which means we need to construct sufficient infrastructure for the economic development," Chinese ambassador to Nepal Zheng Xianglin said at the ceremony.
"we hope this project will be helpful for Nepal's development and benefit both Chinese and Nepali people," he added.
Under the agreement on Economic and Technical Cooperation between China and Nepal signed in December, 2003 and Exchange Letters signed between the two governments on August, 2004, the Chinese government agreed to aid "Kathmandu-Khasa Optical Fiber Cable Laying Project" at the request of Nepali government.
With the completion of the 125-km optical information super- highway, the project will help Nepal link the rest of the world via China.
The project is expected to start in November this year and complete in mid-2008.
