Vietnam had 24 seagoing vessels detained at foreign ports in the first eight months of this year due to their unsafety and poor environmental protection capacity.

Most of the vessels were taken into custody at ports in South Korea, China, Greece and Argentina, local newspaper Vietnam Economic Times reported Wednesday.

Now, Vietnam is ranked the 7th among 10 countries having highest numbers of detained ships. The main reasons for the detainment of Vietnamese ships include unhygiene, and shortage of lifebuoys and fire prevention equipment, the newspaper said.

Vietnam had 19 ships detained at foreign ports in 2002 and 38 vessels in 2004. The country currently has some 3,000 cargo ships of all kinds, including 300 seagoing vessels.
