Red Hat Inc., the U.S. open- source software maker, said Wednesday its fiscal second-quarter earnings rose sharply, driven by higher revenue from subscriptions for its Linux operating software.
Net income in the quarter ended Aug. 31 rose 65 percent to 18.2 million U.S. dollars, or 9 cents per share, from 11 million dollars, or 5 cents, in the year-ago period.
Earnings adjusted to exclude items increased to 36.9 million dollars, or 17 cents per share, from 24.5 million dollars, or 12 cents, a year earlier.
Revenue rose 28 percent to 127.3 million dollars and subscription revenue rose apace to 109.2 million dollars.
"Overall, we believe the demand for our solutions continues to be strong around the world," said Matthew Szulik, Red Hat's chairman and chief executive officer.
He said the company will continue to offer customers products that provide "agility at the lowest cost."
