The Indonesian government bans the importation of Canadian beef over health concern and protests from the Ulema Council who questioned the halal certification, local press said Thursday.
The agriculture minister on Aug. 13 issued a ruling that suspended the importation, reported leading economic daily Bisnis Indonesia.
"According to the decree, import of Canadian beef meat is suspended, except for the products already in shipment before the ruling was issued," Agriculture Minister Anton Apriantono told the Indonesian-language newspaper.
Beef import from a country not officially declared as fully free from the mad cow disease should pass a verification test from a ministry's team.
Besides, the slaughterhouses in the country of origin must get halal certification -- meaning that the products are prepared under Islamic prescription -- recognized by the Indonesian Ulema Council, the minister said.
