More people in Germany got jobs in August when the number of employed rose to the highest level since German unification, the German Federal Statistical Office said Thursday.
According to provisional results issued by the Wiesbaden-based office, the number of people in employment whose place of residence was in Germany was approximately 39.71 million in August, up 1.6 percent from the same period last year.
Compared with the previous month, the number of people in employment grew by 72,000, a 0.2 percent rise. But the office said the increase was slightly below the average of the past three years, which stood at around 79,000.
The employment/population ratio, which Germany defines as the share of persons in employment in the total population aged between 15 and 64 years, was 70.2 percent.
The office said the figure continued to be slightly above the European employment target to be met in line with the so-called Lisbon Strategy by 2010.
