British Airways (BA) announced on Thursday that it had placed an order for 12 Airbus A380 Superjumbos and 24 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, the largest order the airline has made since 1998.
BA said the new planes, both with Rolls-Royce engines, would be delivered between 2010 and 2014, an order which has a list price of 8.2 billion U.S. dollars.
It is the first Airbus order from a British carrier and it will be the first time that Airbus has entered BA's long-haul fleet.
BA also has options to buy seven more A380s from Airbus and a further 18 787s from Boeing.
The new planes would be "greener, quieter and more fuel efficient" with much lower carbon dioxide emissions, BA said.
The A380 Superjumbos and 787 Dreamliner planes would lead to greater efficiencies, offering "significant economic benefits with lower costs per seat," the airline said.
The airline said it would be able to increase capacity by up to 4 percent a year and had more flexibility to tailor future capacity growth in line with market conditions.
