U.S. stocks rose Thursday as higher oil prices lifted shares of energy companies.

The Dow Jones industrial average gained 34.79 points, or 0.25 percent, to 13,912.94. The S&P's 500 Index gained 5.96 points, or 0.39 percent, to 1,531.38. The Nasdaq Composite Index gained 10.56 points, or 0.39 percent, to 2,709.59.

Crude futures surged Thursday on supply concerns. Light, sweet crude for November delivery jumped 2.58 U.S. dollars to settle at 82.88 dollars a barrel.
