Share prices on the London Stock Exchange closed higher Wednesday.
At the close, the FTSE 100-share index was up 34.8 points, or 0. 54 percent, at 6,535.2.
Shares in Northern Rock rose 12 percent on reports that private equity group JC Flowers had secured 15 billion pound sterling of funding for a possible takeover.
Other financial stocks also closed higher with Alliance & Leicester gaining 7 percent as hopes increased that the recent credit crisis was beginning to ease.
Mining shares also lifted the market after metals prices rose.
