Forty-five workplace accidents were reported across China during the weeklong National Day holiday with 156 people dead or missing, down 32.2 percent from a year earlier, the State Administration of Work Safety (SAWS) announced on Monday.
The administration's statistics showed that no serious accidents in the production sector were reported during the latest national holiday.
"However, the country's safety situation was still grim," said Li Yizhong, head of the administration.
A total 61,919 people were killed in work accidents nationwide during the January to August period, 13.9 percent lower than the same period last year, according to the administration.
Li urged enterprises, especially small businesses, to reinforce inspection efforts in order to weed out safety risks.
At least seven miners were killed and five injured in a gas blast in private coal mine in southwest China's Yunnan Province on Oct. 6.
