The Philippines has issued a temporary ban on the importation of domestic and wild birds and their products from a province of Canada for fear of bird flu, reports said on Thursday.
The ban was meant to ensure the archipelagic country remained bird flu free, Philippine ABS-CBN TV citing a memorandum by the Philippine Department of Agriculture reported.
Canadian veterinary officials said last month they found a dangerous strain of bird flu on a farm in the Saskatchewan province. The strain is not normally associated with human illness but is seen as a serious risk to animal health.
Manila has a similar ban on all live bird and poultry imports from Korea and Britain.
The Philippines is one of only three countries in Southeast Asia that has not had avian influenza since the virus resurfaced in Asia in 2003. The two others are Brunei and Singapore. Source: Xinhua
