The 7th World Conference on Sport and Environment opened in Beijing on Thursday as people from the sporting world and environmental specialists aim to exchange knowledge on the various ways of promoting the coadjustment of sport and environment.
The three-day conference is jointly held by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2008 Olympic Games (BOCOG), in partnership with the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). Under the motto "From Plan to Action", the focus of the conference will lie in translating opportunities into practical action to ensure a sustainable future.
"Sport can and must contribute to earn even higher degree in the fight against global warming and climate change," said IOC president Jacques Rogge while addressing the opening of the conference. "This conference in Beijing is an excellent platform on which to explore new ideas."
Following presentations from past and future Organizing Committees for the Olympic Games (OCOGs), a complete session will be devoted to Beijing's environment partners, who will present a progress report on the preparations for the 2008 Games.
