The number of vehicles hitting Belgian roads has doubled in the past 30 years, and there are now six cars for every 10 Belgians, according to figures published Thursday by the statistics department of the Belgian Ministry of Economy.
There are currently 6.3 million vehicles on the Belgian road, 5 million of which are passenger cars, the department said.
The number of vehicles in Belgium has grown by 19.1 percent since 1997, lower than the 28 percent increase between 1987 and 1997, statistics showed.
Meanwhile, the number of petrol-fueled vehicles fell by 20 percent over the past decade, compared with a slight increase of 4.9 percent in the 1987 -1997 period.
The number of vehicles for every 10 Belgians has risen steadily in the past three decades. In 1977 there were 3.4 vehicles among every 10 Belgians, and the figure rose to 4.2 in 1987, 5.2 in 1997 and six in 2007.
