German Finance Minister Peer Steinbrueck said more efforts are needed to quell the turbulence in the world's major financial markets caused by the U.S. subprime mortgage crisis, local media reported Friday.

Steinbrueck made the comments during a meeting in Paris Thursday, according to Germany's Handelsblatt newspaper.

Finance ministers from Germany, Britain, France and Italy held the meeting in Paris, during which they said the European economy could bear the brunt of the financial market crisis, the newspaper said.
