Japanese Finance Minister Fukushiro Nukaga and U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson talked over global economy and agreed to work together closely on Saturday in Tokyo before a meeting of Group of Seven financial leaders.
Nukaga and Paulson "had a frank exchange of views on such topics as the global economy, the U.S. and the Japanese economies,financial markets and climate change," Japan's finance ministry said in a statement.
The two financial chiefs agreed to continue to cooperate closely and to keep a good working relation, said the statement.
The Finance ministers and central bank governors from Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States are gathering in Tokyo for a one-day meeting, with a focus on measures to ease the current financial market turmoil stemming from the U.S.subprime crisis.
Nukaga will co-chair the G7 meeting together with Japan's central bank chief Toshihiko Fukui. He said Friday that "it is important that we work together and send a message to stabilize the financial markets and keep the global economy growing."
The G7 meeting session will start around noon with a working lunch. After that, the financial leaders are expected to hold a dinner with delegates from China, South Korea, Indonesia and Russia to discuss the impact of the U.S. economic slowdown on emerging economies.
