The purchase of 10 Boeing planes by Indonesia's flag carrier Garuda Indonesia may become a message to the European Union about the country's seriousness in improving safety measures, an official said Tuesday.
"By this purchase, we'd like to deliver message to the European Union that Indonesia is improving the aviation safety," Transportation Minister Jusman Syafi'i Djamal was quoted by leading news website Detikcom as saying.
The European Commission has recently extended a three-month ban against all Indonesian airlines from entering the region for safety concerns.
The move to modernize fleets showed Indonesia's seriousness in dealing with safety issue, the minister made the remarks after signing an order for 10 Boeing 777-300ERs with Boeing on the sidelines of the Singapore Air Show.
Also on Tuesday, Indonesia's budget carrier Lion Air announced an order for 56 more Boeing 737-900ERs valued at more than 4.4 billion U.S. dollars.
The new deal brought Lion Air's combined orders for the plane to 178, making it the world's largest operator of the 900ERs. Source: Xinhua
