By 0930 GMT, the FTSE 100 index was down 36.9 points at 5,895.3 following loses seen in the US and Asia overnight.
Top losers are Workspace Group which shed 5.58 percent, Wetherspoon which shed 5.58 and Quintain Estates and Development which lost 5.42.
