At the founding ceremony for the Chinese Association on Large Dams held on June 8, Chen Lei, Minister of Water Resources for China said that China ranks first in the world in terms of the number of large dams completed, number of large dams under construction and total installed capacity of hydroelectric power.

Meanwhile China also leads the world in large dam design and construction.

Up to now, China has constructed 85,412 reservoirs with a total capacity of 634.5 billion cubic meters.

Regarding those reservoirs that are in a dilapidated condition or faulty, Chen said that reinforcement and repair work on faulty and dangerous large and medium-sized reservoirs and key small reservoirs will be completed by the end of 2010.
