Deputy Director-General of the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) Gao Hongfeng said China has experienced rapid development in the civil aviation industry in recent years; and has become the world's second largest aviation country - second only to the United States.

Last year, the CAAC transported 160 million passengers. In the first half of this year, the growth rate was up 19.6% from the same period last year. Every day there are as many as 1,200 flights - at peak times up to 84 flights land or take off.

Meanwhile, the CAAC has also increased the number of passenger planes. So far, China has 1,067 such planes. By 2010, the amount will grow to 1,500; and by 2020, there will be 3,000.

During next year's Olympics, Gao Hongfeng promises to take steps to guarantee smooth traffic in the sky. The steps include strengthening infrastructure construction; expanding the major Olympics airport; improving traffic control in the sky; optimizing the aviation lines; and forming a leadership team to prepare for the Olympics.
