Affected by the U.S. stock market slide, Taiwan share prices nose-dived Monday with the weighted index losing 232.01 points, or 2.71 percent, to close at 8,299.37, according to media reports reaching in Hong Kong from Taipei.
The local bourse opened at 8,500.81 and fluctuated between 8, 507.29 and 8,286.57 during the day's session. A total of 5.13 billion shares changed hands on market turnover of 145.76 billion New Taiwan dollars (4.75 billion U.S. dollars).
All the eight major stock categories lost ground, with construction shares and cement stocks both moving down the most at5.1 percent, followed by foodstuff issues at 4.9 percent, textile shares at 4.2 percent, banking and financial stocks at 3.2 percent, machinery and electronics issues at 2.8 percent, plastics and chemicals shares at 2.4 percent, and paper and pulp stocks at 1.6percent.
Losers outnumbered gainers 1,800 to 290, with 236 stocks remaining unchanged. Source: Xinhua
