Chinese shares opened lower on Friday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index declining 0.99 percent, to 2100.06 points.

The smaller Shenzhen index was also down 1.41 percent to open at 7668.11 points.

As of 9:38 a.m., the key Shanghai index dropped 2.13 percent to 2076.11 points.
