According to Beijing Times, on January 8, the China Internet Association released its "Netguide2008 China Internet report." The report showed that China's total consumption on the Internet in 2007 reached 398.8 billion yuan. In 2008, the growth rate is expected to increase to 45.8%, increasing total consumption to 581.5 billion yuan.
In 2007, the 55 branches of internet industry grew. Most representative in growth were the integrated portal market growing 22.3% and reaching 12.35 billion yuan; financial websites growing by 58.6% and reaching 9.2 billion yuan last year; and the search engine market increased by 82.8% in 2007, reaching 2.87 billion yuan.
In addition, the report also revealed that Internet users in China most frequently use Internet services and applications to: 1. browse for news, 38.8 %; 2. access e-mail, 11 %; and 3. to blog, 9.2%.
65% to 90% of China’s mobile phone users are single.
According to China News Network, the Internet Association of China released their annual survey on January 8, saying that in 2007, of the 182 million Chinese Internet users, 65% are "playing single" (unmarried); 90% are mobile phone users; 50% use desktops computers; and 25% use portable computers. In 2008, the number of Internet users is expected to reach 244 million.
Students still make up the largest proportion of Internet users - accounting for 20% of all Internet users - followed by IT industry users. Data revealed that generally, Internet users received a high level of education - 60% had undergraduate or post-graduates degrees; the 26-30 age group has become a major force in internet consumption; and consumers tend to come from higher income areas such as Beijing, Shanghai and Zhejiang.
