Founded in 1928 as the National Research Institute of Engineering, the Shanghai Institute of Microsystem and Information Technology (SIMIT), formerly known as Shanghai Institute of Metallurgy, has evolved into a hi-tech research center as it prepares to celebrate its 80th anniversary this year.
A member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), SIMIT was among the first to initiate the Pilot Project for Knowledge Innovation Program launched by CAS in 1998.

National Research Institute of Engineering as it looked eight decades ago. Through its expertise in micro-electronics, wireless sensor networks and new generation mobile communication technologies, SIMIT continues to strengthen its efforts in integrated technology-based innovation.

The Shanghai Institute of Microsystem and Information Technology today. The institute's current research includes low-orbit communication mini-satellites, integrated micro-optic electro-mechanical systems, microsystem wireless communications, microstructural semiconductor materials and devices, terahertz physics and devices, nano-electronics materials and devices, silicon-on-insulator materials and devices and other new patterns of high-efficiency micro intelligent energy systems.
SIMIT is building itself into an institute with a strong technical force and lasting vigor for innovation.
It also expects to be a top-grade institute in China and be well known internationally.
SIMIT will celebrate its 80th anniversary at Changning Science and Technology Park on June 28, 2008 and sincerely welcomes your presence.
