In recent years, the output value of China's geological information industry has grown at an annual average rate of 20 percent, with its gross value climbing to 60 billion yuan in 2008. Although some geological information technologies and products have already reached or are approaching the current international advanced level, the industry still relies on imports for its key technologies.
There are already over 10,000 organizations in the geological information industry, employing 400,000 personnel. Between January and May this year, most enterprises in the industry increased their output value by 20 to 40 percent year-on-year, according to the State Bureau of Surveying and Mapping.
At present, China's geological information industry comprises four major sectors, namely the survey and mapping services sector, the remote sensing sector, the geological information system sector and the satellite navigation sector.
